Alex Bridger writes about Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine 2014 tour
It’s been more than 30 years since Depeche Mode have visited Leeds to do a gig. With the long wait it seemed that the crowd were even more up for a night of Depeche on the night of Wednesday, November 13, 2013! The show opened with the sounds of Welcome to My World and then with Angel, both of which feature in the band’s latest album Delta Machine, which arguably, is a real return to form in the spirit of their previous work such as Violator and Black Celebration. The band clearly were really enjoying themselves that night, with Gahan singing from the bottom of his soul and enjoying every moment, Fletcher providing the cool and dark synth sounds and Gore delivering some incredible and heart-felt solo renditions of Shake the Disease and Home, with superb piano accompaniment by Gordino. Being a Depeche Mode fan myself, there were many highlights in the set, including Black Celebration, Behind the Wheel, I Feel You and Never Let Me Down. Clearly the crowd enjoyed the night with the band coming out on an encore to do a further five songs. I enjoyed the night so much that my partner and I went out and bought more tickets for the Manchester gig two nights later!
